Tor Forret Farm Cottage

Light, Space, and Practicality Added with Care

Light, Space, and Practicality Added with Care

This traditional rural farmhouse was sensitively transformed for modern family life through four compact, well-judged extensions that add light, utility, and joy without overwhelming the original cottage.

Targeted Additions

South- and west-facing sunroom: A single-storey garden room filled with natural light, framing broad views and providing a bright counterpoint to the existing, more enclosed living spaces.

Two-storey extension: Creates a dedicated home office and first-floor en-suite, with a covered back-door porch beneath a glass roof for sheltered arrivals and everyday practicality.

Dormer extension: Reconfigures the roof to deliver a genuinely useful third bedroom with improved headroom, daylight and provided space for a desk.

Boot room: A compact front-door extension that declutters the hall, offering space for coats, boots, and kit to keep circulation areas tidy.

A consistent materials palette ties the additions together and complements the existing cottage: natural stone at low level with board-on-board larch cladding above for warmth and texture. Natural slate roofs are used where appropriate, with a discreet low-pitch Sarnafil roof to the sunroom. High-quality triple-glazed windows and doors enhance comfort and efficiency, while Lindab steel gutters provide durable, low-maintenance rainwater goods.

Outcome

Outcome

The ensemble of small moves delivers a step-change in daily living: brighter spaces, a dedicated workspace, improved bedrooms, and a practical entrance sequence. Energy-efficient upgrades and durable materials ensure long-term performance with minimal upkeep. The project achieves a quietly transformative result and, importantly, offered exceptional value for the client.
